DFGE\u2013 the Institute for Energy, Ecology and Economy \u2013 will release a press release each month until the end of 2016 to ask simple questions that can help audit company\u2019s gaps in sustainability programs and how to quickly bridge them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Greifenberg\/M\u00fcnchen, 6th Junr 2016<\/strong> \u2013 DFGE \u2013 Institute for Energy, Ecology and Economy \u2013 was founded in 1999 as a spin-off of the Technical University of Munich and offers complete consulting, software and audit solutions in the field of sustainability. DFGE partners with internationally-recognized reporting frameworks to better support companies in their sustainability management and reporting. DFGE will publish a series of monthly news with a checklist of questions on sustainability programs. The first of this series is about the general strategy setting, while the seven other ones will focus on each of the domain of the CSR standard ISO 26 000-2010<\/a> .

\n1 \u2013 Is the management engaged?<\/strong><\/p>\n

To make sure that a sustainability program will work, it is paramount to make sure that the topic is understood by the organization\u2019s leaders and part of their responsibilities, and that money is allocated to such topic. Companies can ask themselves these questions:<\/p>\n

  • Has the management been informed and trained on what sustainability entails?<\/li>\n
  • Has the company implemented CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) governance with dedicated roles and responsibilities for sustainability domains?<\/li>\n
  • Has the company set a dedicated budget for CSR activities?<\/li>\n
  • Are managers incentivized on CSR criteria?<\/li>\n

     
    \n2 \u2013 Are employees involved?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Engaging the management is obviously key to make decisions. To move CSR forward, and to make it part and parcel of the company\u2019s DNA, employees must be involved. Companies can easily check that employees are taking part in the CSR strategy implementation by answering these questions:<\/p>\n

  • By which means do the employee know that there is a sustainability agenda?<\/li>\n
  • Have the employees been asked their opinion when developing the sustainability strategy?<\/li>\n
  • Have managers explained to their team the sustainability agenda of the company?<\/li>\n
  • Has the company implemented actions for employees to be proud of the company?<\/li>\n
  • Has the company implemented volunteering initiatives for employees?<\/li>\n

     
    \n3 \u2013 Are stakeholders consulted?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    CSR is generally defined as how organizations manage their impacts towards stakeholders. Stakeholders are any party affected by the company\u2019s decisions and actions such as shareholders, clients, suppliers, employees, communities, civil society, among others. To benefit from a successful CSR strategy, companies need to identify the related impacts towards stakeholders, to manage such impacts, and to consult them to see if the actions are matching their expectations. The following questions show if stakeholders were consulted:<\/p>\n

  • Have you consulted your stakeholders to identify what topics are the most important to them?<\/li>\n
  • Has the company identified the stakeholders?<\/li>\n
  • Has the company identified existing mechanisms to interact with stakeholders to add CSR topics to them?<\/li>\n
  • Has the company launched dedicated consulting mechanisms like an advisory panel?<\/li>\n
  • Has the company lobbied governments for sustainability topics?<\/li>\n
  • Is there a channel for stakeholders to report opinions on the sustainability performance of the company?<\/li>\n
  • Does the company help smaller companies achieve their sustainability programs?<\/li>\n

     
    \n4 \u2013 Is the sustainability strategy intertwined with the overall strategy?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    When setting a sustainability strategy, companies need to make sure that the strategy makes sense for them and is incorporated into the overall strategy and goals of the company. The following questions should help to identify if this goal has been reached.<\/p>\n

  • Is it a long-term sustainability strategy?<\/li>\n
  • Does the strategy address real and existing issues faced by the company?<\/li>\n
  • Have the challenges and hurdles that the company will face when implementing such strategy been identified?<\/li>\n
  • Has the strategy the potential to last, and grow over the years?<\/li>\n
  • Has the company identified which issues are most important for the company and its stakeholders (materiality principle)?<\/li>\n
  • Have the impact and effectiveness of the strategy been assessed?<\/li>\n
  • Have peers been benchmarked?<\/li>\n
  • Does the strategy include competitive advantages?<\/li>\n

     
    \n5 \u2013 Is a mechanism review implemented to measure the efficiency of the strategy?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    To make sure that the strategy is efficient, it is important to set quantitative goals, and then to measure them through dedicated KPIs (key performance indicators). Then, KPIs need to be reviewed to assess to which extent such targets were reached. An analysis needs to be carried out to find out the causes of non-completion and to reset new targets accordingly. Companies can browse through this checklist:<\/p>\n

  • Have targets been set?<\/li>\n
  • Have KPIs been defined to assess the targets?<\/li>\n
  • Are review meetings organized?<\/li>\n
  • Are decisions made according to such reviews?<\/li>\n
  • Have KPIs been changed if they were too inaccurate to represent the target?<\/li>\n

     
    \n6 \u2013 Does the company communicate about the CSR program?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Once all relevant and dedicated persons are engaged and consulted, and once the strategy is set and measured, it is important to report on the strategy and on its successes. Indeed, such communication let the stakeholders know of such progresses, and leads the company to benefit from CSR opportunities. Companies should review the following questions:<\/p>\n

  • Has the company reported on both successes and non-achievement of targets?<\/li>\n
  • Does the company report through a CSR report?<\/li>\n
  • Is the report externally assured and verified?<\/li>\n
  • Are the commitments made public?<\/li>\n
  • Does the company report to internally recognized standards<\/li>\n

     
    \nOnce companies answered this general questions on the sustainability program, they will be able to tackle specific themes of their CSR strategy, e.g. environment, human rights, labor practices, community involvement, governance, fair operating practices and consumer issues.<\/p>\n
