In May 2016, DFGE launched a series of CSR checklists to improve the Sustainability programs of organizations, based on ISO 26 000, the norm for social responsibility. First, we focused on the general structure and governance of such program. Then, we applied it to the main core subjects of Social Responsibility: Environment, Labor Practices, Human Rights, Community Development and Involvement, Consumer issues. The last checklist focuses on fair operating practices.
What are fair operating practices?
Fair operating practices concern ethical conduct in an organization’s dealings with other organizations. These include relationships between organizations and government agencies, as well as between organizations and their partners, suppliers, contractors, customers, competitors, and the associations of which they are members.”
More precisely, fair business operating gather the following topics:
- Anti-corruption
- Fair competition
- Responsible political involvement
- Sustainable procurement
- Property rights
First, have you structured the fair operating practices topic? Structuring is key in ensuring the good implementation of your program.
Then, how does your organization fight corruption and ensure fair competition? Fair operating practices include avoiding any form of corruption or anticompetitive practices. It leads to less reputational and legal risks, and it helps reinforcing the current laws in vigor.
Third, does your company practice responsible political involvement? Indeed, it is important to also avoid corruption here.
Fourth, how does the company include social responsibility in the value chain? The topic of sustainable procurement means including environmental and social criteria when buying products. It helps controlling the impacts and risks within the supply chain.
Fifth, how the respect for property rights is made possible? The right to property is part of human rights. Companies need to respect such right, and to protect their own intellectual properties.
