Global emissions are reaching record levels and the next decade of decision-making will be critical. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned of severe consequences of a failure to prevent global warming exceeding 1.5°C. To reach this goal, emissions must halve by 2030 and drop to net-zero by 2050. The United Nations have therefore introduced the UN Climate Action Summit 2019 to further motivate all stakeholders, especially the private sector, to make a serious pledge against climate change.
“The last four years were the four hottest on record. Winter temperatures in the Arctic have risen by 3°C since 1990.” (United Nations 2019)
UN Climate Action Summit 2019 – a race we can win!
The United Nations are inviting all leaders to come to New York on 23 September with concrete, realistic plans to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The Summit intends to join stakeholders from governments, the private sector, the civil society and international organizations to develop ambitious plans in the following areas:
- Global transition towards renewable energy
- Sustainable and resilient infrastructures and cities
- Sustainable agriculture and management of forests and oceans
- Resilience and adaptation to climate impacts
- Alignment of public and private finance with a net zero economy
The Summit is getting the ball rolling for a full transformation of economies in line with the sustainable development goals. Everyone should understand: Business is on your side. Climate solutions can make economies more robust. On top of that, they can create new jobs, safeguard biodiversity and ensure cleaner air. Environmental protection and business strategies can go hand in hand.
Act now and commit to 1.5°C
Your organization can now make an official pledge to the 1.5°C target. You can join the global movement of leading companies which have aligned their business strategy with this goal.
By signing the pledge, the organizations commit to introducing a thorough decarbonization plan within the next two years. Furthermore, companies are expected to set science-based targets through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). You can read more here about why your organization should set a science-based target and on how it can help fight climate change.
“The latest analysis shows that if we act now, we can reduce carbon emissions within 12 years and hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C and even, as asked by the latest science, to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.” (United Nations 2019)
Inspired to take action?
DFGE has been supporting companies in their sustainability efforts since 1999 and can help your organization develop a decarbonization plan and set a science-based target. This includes setting an intensity and/or absolute target corridor for Scope 1, 2 and optionally Scope 3 emissions. Furthermore, we can implement a 360° project to investigate and implement the optimum SBT solution for your company.
