In 1978, Faravelli GmbH became an independent subsidiary of the Milan-based distributor Giusto Faravelli SPA, which was founded in 1926. The company is a global leader in the distribution of high-quality ingredients and raw materials for the food, pet food, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and fine chemicals industries. Faravelli’s value chain is global, very broad and complex, as sensitive products need to be delivered quickly and safely to production sites in a wide range of industries.

As part of its strategic direction, Faravelli has decided to deepen its environmental responsibility. An important step in this direction was the calculation of the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) for the product copper(I) chloride, an important raw material in the chemical industry. Faravelli GmbH commissioned DFGE – Institute for Energy, Ecology and Economy to carry out this project.

“The decision to work with DFGE was an obvious one. Their technical expertise and extensive experience in calculating CO2 footprints convinced us. It was important for us to find a partner who not only has the technical skills, but is also able to precisely analyze our complex, international supply chain and thus meet our sustainability requirements.”

Challenges

Global supply chain and rising stakeholder expectations

Calculating the product carbon footprint for copper(I) chloride presented Faravelli and DFGE with several challenges. A key difficulty lay in the international orientation of the company and the complex supply chain. In particular, the collaboration with a South Korean partner company required detailed coordination and collection of the necessary production and supply data.

A critical aspect of this project was also the accurate recording of the recycling processes necessary for the production of secondary copper. This information was crucial to determine the correct emission factors for copper and thus ensure accurate carbon accounting. In addition, ever-increasing stakeholder expectations and constantly evolving environmental standards put additional pressure on the project.

Solution

Accurate analysis and strategic recommendations in record time

Despite the aforementioned challenges, DFGE managed to carry out a comprehensive carbon footprint analysis in just 1.5 months. The close cooperation with Faravelli and the precise coordination of global requirements made this possible. The time limit in particular was crucial, as Faravelli had to present the PCF values by the end of June 2024 during an important visit to South Korea.

DFGE relied on the proven cradle-to-gate method, which takes into account the entire carbon footprint from raw material extraction to delivery to the plant. With the help of advanced analysis methods and precise data collection, the project was successfully completed within the tight timeframe.

Ergebnis

Transparenz und gestärkte Marktposition

The project resulted in a detailed report on the product carbon footprint of the copper(I) chloride. On this basis, Faravelli GmbH is able to make well-founded decisions and not only evaluate its sustainability strategy, but also develop it further in a targeted manner. The report not only made the carbon footprint of the product visible, but also showed concrete possibilities for further reduction.

Thanks to the support of DFGE, Faravelli was able to calculate the PCF in a very short time and communicate this important information to customers and partners. This strengthened stakeholder confidence and improved the company’s market position at the same time.

In the future, Faravelli plans to extend the carbon footprint analysis to other products in order to demonstrate transparency and environmental responsibility.
