This year the 71st celebration of the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights (UDHR) takes place. DFGE outlines key points and general information of the Human Rights Day in this article.
Human Rights Day
Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10th December – the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. All articles of the Declaration are as relevant today as they were in 1948. As a result, they are celebrated annually.
This year the Human Rights Day is celebrated with the theme „Stand Up for Human Rights“ or more specifically „Youth Standing Up for Human Rights“. The United Nations General Assembly aims to celebrate the potential of youth as constructive agents of change, amplify their voices and engage a broad range of global audiences in the promotion and protection of Human Rights.
Human Rights are the foundation of the Sustainable Development Goals, without the human dignity we are not able to reach sustainable development.
Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is available in more than 500 languages which makes it the most translated document in the world. The Declaration proclaims the inalienable rights to which every human being, regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status, is entitled to.
Eleanor Roosevelt played an instrumental role in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. After being First Lady from 1933 to 1945, she used her enormous prestige and credibility to steer the drafting process toward its successful completion in 1946, as the first Chairperson of the Commission of Human Rights. Other women also played essential parts in shaping the document, for example Hansa Mehta changed the phrase „All men are born free and equal“ to the first article „All human beings are born free and equal“.
