Yesterday, on February 6th the 2023 CDP scores were published, providing crucial insights into companies‘ environmental performance.
The Significance of CDP Scores
The CDP scores serve as a comprehensive assessment of companies‘ environmental performance, covering areas such as carbon emissions, climate change resilience, water and deforestation management. By evaluating companies‘ efforts in managing climate change, water usage, and deforestation risks, these scores provide stakeholders with a comprehensive understanding of their environmental impact. From investors seeking responsible investment opportunities to consumers demanding transparency, the CDP scores serve as a critical benchmark for sustainability performance.
For businesses, the release of CDP scores represents an opportunity to benchmark their sustainability performance, identify areas for improvement, and demonstrate leadership in environmental stewardship. Every year, the number of companies disclosing their environmental data is significantly increasing. In 2023, more than 21,000 companies were scored by CDP.
Leadership in Action: CDP’s A List
The release of the latest CDP scores shines a spotlight on the leaders in sustainability. Companies achieving the highest possible score, an A, not only excel in environmental performance but also demonstrate a commitment to innovation, transparency, and stakeholder engagement. Their success stories serve as role models and inspiration for others to follow suit.
346 companies made it onto the 2023 Climate Change A List. For the water questionnaire, 101 companies achieved an A score and for the forests questionnaire 30 companies.

The Path Forward
As we navigate the complex challenges of climate change and resource depletion, the importance of collective action and collaboration cannot be overstated. The release of CDP scores serves as a call to action for companies to redouble their efforts in addressing environmental challenges, setting ambitious sustainability goals, and embracing innovation to drive positive change.
DFGE’S support
Since 2014, the DFGE – Institute for Energy, Ecology and Economy has been supporting well-known companies in answering the CDP questionnaire as a Silver Climate Change Consultancy Partner. In addition to assisting with the CDP Climate Change and CDP Supply Chain Program, DFGE also supports companies in the areas of Water and Forest.
DFGE is the first selected CDP partner for the German-speaking region. Its CDP accreditation provides a special quality guarantee including specific Science Based Targets.
DFGE can support you in collecting data for a successful participation in the CDP Assessment. This will not only result in an improved score, but will also generate synergy effects for the fulfillment of customer requests (e.g. regarding participation in EcoVadis), sustainability reporting standards (e.g. GRI) and legal regulations (e.g. the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, CSRD). Having environmental performance data available is also needed for the development of a holistic ESG Strategy, which should be the compass for your future sustainability roadmap.
