In 2009 the ACI EUROPE launched the Airport Carbon Accreditation with the goal of assessment and recognition of the participating airports‘ efforts to carbon managment and reduction.
The process is divided in four levels:
- Mapping – Footprint Measurement
- Reduction – Carbon Management towards a reduced carbon footprint
- Optimisation – Third Party engagement in carbon footprint reduction
- Neutrality – Carbon neutrality for direct emissions by offsetting
In this independet programme airports must have carbon footprints independently verified in accordance to ISO 14064 (GHG Accounting).
The emission balance is based on the methodology of the Green House Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) which divides direct and indirect emissions into 3 relevant scopes.
Please find more information on the process on the official website.
