Quantifying Your Physical Climate Risks – In Use at DFGE
What is Climada?
CLIMADA Technologies (Climada) is a spin-off of ETH Zurich. For over a decade, Climada has collaborated closely with the university—particularly the Weather and Climate Risks department. Together, they continuously develop the open-source platform delta-climate™.
What is delta-climate™?
The delta-climate™ software is a global multi-hazard model designed to calculate the socioeconomic impacts of weather and climate. It enables the analysis of physical climate risks (e.g., floods, heatwaves, or tropical storms) for individual sites or entire portfolios worldwide.
Companies can precisely quantify the likelihood of natural hazards and associated financial losses across various climate scenarios—and assess the benefits of adaptation measures. The software also supports compliance with regulations like the CSRD, specifically the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), and delivers auditable results for reporting.
DFGE & CLIMADA Technologies – Our Partnership
As a certified Climada partner, DFGE experts professionally process client-specific site data, analyze physical climate risks using delta-climate™, and deliver ESG-compliant evaluations—including concrete recommendations for improving climate resilience. This makes complex climate risks measurable, comparable, and strategically usable for companies.
At DFGE, we remain vendor-independent when it comes to software. Our focus is always on the most effective and suitable solution for our clients — the one that delivers the greatest impact for sustainability. We use our own tools as well as those from partners like Climada—and also support clients using other sustainability management software such as SAP, Salesforce, or Microsoft. Our coaching spans requirement definition, tool selection and implementation, deployment, and independent review of outcomes. Our motto: A tool is only as good as the intelligence using it.
Where is delta-climate™ used at DFGE?
As a key element in Climate-Related Risk and Opportunity Analysis (CRO):
CRO analysis identifies and evaluates significant climate-related risks and opportunities for businesses in accordance with ESRS guidelines. Physical climate risks for specific sites are identified and quantified using delta-climate™, including:
- Acute physical risks from unforeseen extreme weather events like tropical cyclones, heavy rainfall, or heatwaves
- Chronic physical risks due to long-term climate changes such as rising global temperatures or sea levels
Advantages of delta-climate™:
- Site-specific risk identification and quantification: Enables precise assessment of physical climate risks at individual locations, supporting targeted measures
- Scenario-based projections: Risks are analyzed under future scenarios (e.g., IPCC RCPs/SSPs), aiding strategic long-term planning
- Opportunity assessment: Potential advantages of climate changes, like new markets or site benefits, can also be evaluated
- Scientifically sound methodology: Based on ETH Zurich’s CLIMADA framework, continuously updated to ensure valid and transparent results
- Regulatory reporting readiness: Automated processes and clear visuals streamline reporting for CSRD (ESRS E1) and EU Taxonomy
- Enhanced climate resilience: Identified risks inform adaptation planning and investment decisions, boosting company resilience
Benefits of delta-climate™ and DFGE Expertise
With the scientifically grounded delta-climate™ software and DFGE’s analytical expertise, physical climate risks become measurable, comparable, and strategically actionable. We assess acute and chronic climate risks at a site-specific level—based on internationally recognized climate scenarios. Our experts prepare the relevant site data, conduct risk assessments, and provide ESG-compliant results with clear recommendations. This not only supports mandatory CSRD/ESRS reporting but also helps companies plan and implement targeted measures to strengthen climate resilience.
