Buy consciously, dress sustainably, wear it longer, dispose it in an environmentally friendly way. Invest sustainably in our planet, it is the only home we have. Your clothes make people / sustainable, organic, fair – this is the motto for the Earth Day and formulates the requirement for each of us to commit to resource conservation and climate protection.
In 1969 the name and concept of Earth Day was first proposed at a UNESCO conference. Since it was founded more than 50 years ago in the USA, Earth Day on April 22 has grown into a global environmental people’s movement in 168 countries around the world. In Germany, the German Committee e.V. of Earth Day International has been operating as a non-profit, independent environmental initiative since 1994. The protagonists are the people, associations, organizations, scientists and the media, who see Earth Day as a stage for dialogue and a spirit of initiative on all sides, as a popular campaign for an ecologically shaped lifestyle, and who make their commitment public here. The aim of the day is to bring about an increased appreciation for the natural environment and a rethinking of consumer behavior.
The Earth Day movement calls people on April 22: “Make every day Earth Day”. To this day, the Earth Days have always remained neutral, providing assistance, networking and creating media presence for the many local environmental initiatives.
Every year, Earth Day on April 22 provides a wide range of activities relating to the broad spectrum of environmental and climate protection for everyone to initiate and permanently implement their personal environmental agenda. The focal points are environmental education in schools as well as environmental popular campaigns to develop an ecological, sustainable lifestyle. The impending ecological upheavals require a global rethink. There are many small steps, and anyone can take them.
As everyone is in demand, in Germany, a wide range of campaigns on the topic of climate protection take place on every Earth Day. For this reason, the annual topics are chosen in such a way that everyone can take part in Earth Day and not only become aware of environmentally relevant topics, but also question themselves: how can I change something in my environment – privately or professionally?
